Located at the northern extent of the Inside Passage route, this community is situated along the Chilkat River. This is a popular port community linked to the traditional highway system that connects to the Alaska Highway via the Haines state scenic byway. The community is also popular for its Bald Eagle population in the autumn. In October, the world's largest number of Bald Eagles gather in Haines to take advantage of the late salmon run. This amazing gathering of eagles is the basis of the Bald Eagle Preserve and annual festival held in their honor.
